International mobility
The Erasmus+ Programme is the new European Union programme for education, training of young people and of sport that substitutes and integrates the Lifelong Learning Programme - LLP for the next 7 years (2014-2020), combining activities that were previous part of a number of separate programmes and which also includes actions in the field of sport, the new sector of European competence.
In particular, the KA1 from the programme promotes international mobility and allows students to spend study periods (Erasmus+ study) or trainee work placements (Erasmus+ traineeships) at European Universities or research centres. During the stay abroad, it is possible to attend courses, take exams and obtain acknowledgement from the University attended or take part in traineeships that can correspond to the period of internship for preparing degree thesis. The programme offers funding to support the cost of staying overseas, which varies according to the destination country.
Recognition of the credits and correspondence to the ones to be taken at the University of Trieste are stated in the training activities table (and any updates), submitted by the student before departure and approved by the Council for the Programme in Neuroscience.
For the part regarding the conversion of scores, please refer, where possible, to the new “ECTS Users’ Guide” published in 2009 by the European Commission that has simplified the score transfer procedures. This system provides for a simple statistical distribution of scores based on the scale used in several national systems, drawn up for each Programme or for each homogeneous group of Programmes.
The New ECTS Table provides a more immediate comparison between two or more scoring systems and cultures and allows a simple, transparent interpretation and conversion of scores from one system or context to another and therefore does justice to the level of academic results.
For traineeships, it has been established that one week of laboratory activity corresponds to 1 ECTS (1 ECTS corresponds to 1 Italian credit, CFU). Therefore, when filling out the Learning agreement regarding the number of recognised credits, it is necessary to take into consideration the period spent overseas and the correspondence of one week to 1 CFU (e.g. 6 months of traineeship abroad - 26 weeks - correspond to 26 ECTS). Students must remember that the fact of carrying out a traineeship for the internship foreseen for an experimental thesis does not exempt them for its approval by the Council for the Programme in Neuroscience.

The two-year International Master Degree in Neuroscience aims at providing a multidisciplinary training in Neurobiology, with topics ranging from Molecular to Behavioral Neurosciences. Having in common a multi-level approach to Brain Research, Neuroscientists at the BRAIN Centre for Neuroscience and International School for Advanced Studies (ISAS-SISSA), Trieste offer graduate neuroscience studies at the University of Trieste. Students with a 3 year university 1st level degree (BSc) or equivalent in biology, biotechnology, medicine, pharmacy (or equivalent) are encouraged to submit their candidacy. Foreign graduate students are also encouraged to apply to the International Master Degree in Neuroscience. Enrolment will follow standard regulations- see: www.units.it/stranieri/en/.
Normal courses will be held during two semesters. The whole programme, including lecture courses, workshops, seminars, and research training will consists of 120 credits. The first year is devoted mainly to taught courses, while the second will be spent mostly for preparation of a thesis based on an experimental research project. Theoretical and practical courses: Neurophysiology, Cellular Neurobiology, Signal transduction, Sensory systems, Neuropharmacology, Neuropathology, Functional techniques for the study of the nervous system, Molecular biology techniques in Neuroscience, Cognitive processes, Brain imaging. In addition, one intensive short workshop will be held at the end of each semester on “Cellular and molecular basis of neuropathologies” and “Industrial applications of neurosciences” with participation of European SMEs and Multinational pharmaceutical industries.
Courses will be held during two semesters. The 1st semester is from early October to the end of January, the 2nd semester from early march to mid-June, the exact days being determined every year . Christmas and Easter holidays will also be announced every year. There are three periods for exams, in February, July and September. International mobility grants
International mobility grants allow University of Trieste students to travel overseas to European and non-European Universities. Activities that can be carried out overseas may include attending courses or preparing a thesis and must also provide accrual of credits that are recognised by the Council for the Programme in Neuroscience.
