Master of Science in Functional Genomics

Programme description - GF

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The Master's Degree Course in Functional Genomics offers advanced training in the topics and methodologies characterizing research in biomolecular fields

The course program includes basic and applied teachings in the study of the structure, expression and function of genomes in cells, tissues and complex organisms, as well as preeminent disciplines in biomedical research such as immunology, oncology and microbiology. Several courses involve hands-on activities in the teaching laboratory.

Students can also tailor the coursework to their own interests and professional goals, thanks to an adequate supply of electives/optional courses.

The second semester of the 2nd year is reserved for experimental activity for the Thesis, which can be carried out either in the University's laboratories or in other research centers or companies in Trieste, Italy or abroad.

INTERNATIONALIZATION

The CdS has a strong international connotation: all courses in the 2nd year are delivered in English, and each year the course welcomes students from foreign countries. Two double degree programs are active at the Université de Paris and the Université de Rennes (in English), as well as a multiplicity of exchange programs with European and non-European universities.

The Master’s Degree in Functional Genomics program has received a three-year grant from the Italian-French University, under the Vinci 2023 call, in support of Dual Diploma programs.

AFTER GRADUATION

Most graduates in Functional Genomics pass competitive selections with merit to enter PhD programs at prestigious national and international universities and research institutions.

In addition to scientific research, GF graduates find employment in laboratories of hospital institutions, pharmaceutical industries, companies for the development of advanced biotechnologies and their applications in the biomedical field, as well as in education and science dissemination.

WHY CHOOSE TRIESTE

The educational-scientific environment of the LM is of a high standard, thanks to active faculty members in the research areas covered in the courses and the intervention of scientists from local, national and international institutions at seminars and events.

Trieste is home to a number of research institutions: the so-called "Trieste System" includes SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies), ICGEB (International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology), Elettra-Sincrotrone, Centro Studi Fegato, CNR, IRCCS-Burlo Garofolo, among others, which offer internship opportunities for experimental thesis and post-graduate studies.
